The Prince and Princess of Asturias presided the closing of the historic Seminar "Diego Maria de Gardoqui: Trader of Bilbao and First Ambassador to the United States" that took place at the Guggenheim museum of Bilbao, in April 23rd.
The Seminar organized as part as the cultural activities of the Foundation, in collaboration with the Bilbao Chamber of Commerce, was presided over by Jose Ignacio Goirigolzarri, Chairman of the Foundation and Ignacio Echeberria, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce.
The Seminar was divided in two different sessions. The first session focused on the business and trade situation in Bilbao during Gardoqui's time, was moderated by Mr Jose Luis Cano de Gardoqui, history professor and direct descendant of Gardoqui. Aingeru Zabala, Archives Director of the Diputacion Foral de Bizkaia spoke about the trade situation in Bilbao during the end of the 18th century, while Mrs Reyes Calderon focused on the role of the Gardoqui family.
The second session, moderated by Mr Alfonso Sainz Valdivieso, academic and writer was dedicated to diplomatic and politic aspects of Gardoqui. Mr Jose Manuel Allendesalazar, Ambassador of Spain explained the Foreign policy of Spain and France in relation to the American Revolution, while Mr Eduardo Garrigues, Diplomat and member of the Foundation's board, spoke about the political and diplomatic activities of Diego Maria de Gardoqui
The Fundacion Consejo España- Estados Unidos thus hopes to let both countries know the important role of the Spanish society in the history of the United States and strengthen its objective of promoting bilateral relations between both countries.
