Summer course “Fashion & Museums: Balenciaga at the Metropolitan Museum of New York”

The Fundación Consejo España- EE.UU. and the Rey Juan Carlos University organized on July 2nd the summer course “Fashion & Museums: Balenciaga at the Metropolitan Museum of New York” that took place at Casa de America.

Panelists such as Lesley Miller, Senior Curator of the Victoria & Albert Museum of London, Ana Balda, Professor at the University of Navarra, Rafael Perez Arroyo, Design and Fashion Management Degree Coordinator of the Rey Juan Carlos University, and Igor Uría, Collections Director of the Balenciaga Museum in Guetaria, analyzed the international context at the time of Balenciaga, the running of the “Maisons de Haute Couture” in Paris, the special relation between the designer and the United States and the different exhibitions dedicated to Cristobal Balenciaga.

The round table, which also included Miren Vives, Director of the Balenciaga Museum, and Eloy Martínez de la Pera, Curator of the exhibition Balenciaga and Spanish painting, allowed the participants to discuss fashion as an art or a media agenda and the convenience of displaying fashion in museums.

The curse ended with a visit to the exhibition Balenciaga and Spanish Painting of the Thyssen Museum guided by the curator Eloy Martínez de la Pera.
