Working lunch with General (Ret.) David H. Petraeus


On 9th June the Fundación Consejo España – EE. UU. organized a working lunch for its members with General (Retired) David H. Petraeus. The Elcano Royal Institute was the institution that offered the opportunity to have General Petraeus at this exclusive event.

General (Ret.) David H. Petraeus is among the most prominent U.S. military figures of the post-9/11 era. During his 37-year career in the United States Army, General Petraeus was widely recognized for his leadership of the Surge in Iraq and for his command of coalition forces in Afghanistan. After General Petraeus’ retirement from the military, and following confirmation by the Senate by a vote of 94-0, he served as Director of the CIA, during which time the Agency played the central role in a number of important achievements in the global war on terror. General Petraeus is now a Partner with the global investment firm KKR and the Chairman of the KKR Global Institute.

During the lunch, General David H. Petraeus talked with the members of the Fundación about current international affairs, particularly in the fields of politics, economics and strategy. Among other issues, he commented on the Geopolitical balances, including the raise of China, and the Middle East conflict. He also shared his thoughts on the threat from Jihadist terrorism, which focus is on cyberspace, on the future of transatlantic relations and NATO, as well as, on some issues of the domestic and foreign policy of the Trump Administration.

General Petraeus, who defined himself as an optimistic on rational and solid grounds, thanked Spain for its role as a reliable ally on the intelligence, military and diplomatic fields.
