Working visit of Jenniffer González-Colón

Congresswoman Jenniffer González-Colón serves as Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico to the U.S. Congress since January 3, 2017 and co-chairs the Congressional Friends of Spain Caucus. Strong advocate of the admission of Puerto Rico as the 51st state of the Union, Jenniffer González Colón is the first and youngest woman serving as Resident Commissioner. She visited Madrid on September 17 to 19 invited by Fundación Consejo España-EE.UU.

The busy agenda included a welcome breakfast offered by the Board members of the Fundación to the Commissioner and other special guests, as well as working meetings with institutional representatives such as the President of the Congress, Ana Pastor, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Fernando Valenzuela, the Secretary of State for Trade, Xiana Méndez, the General Director for North America, Eastern Europe, Asia and the Pacific (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, EU and Cooperation), Ana Sálomon, and Trinidad Jiménez, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and current Director of Global Strategy for Public Affairs at Telefonica. Congresswoman could also meet with Duke Buchan III, US Ambassador to Spain and Andorra.

Within the framework of this visit, Congresswoman learnt from its Director Luis García Montero the role of Cervantes Institute as an institution strongly devoted globally to the promotion and study of the Spanish language, and the researching activity developed at the Royal Elcano Institute, where she was welcomed by its Director Charles Powell. Besides, she visited El Pais’ editorial offices and had a working lunch with representatives of AmChamSpain Gender, Diversity & Inclusion Committee.

Finally, and with the aim to analyze the challenges, opportunities and institutional and business alliances that can emerge between Spain and Puerto Rico within the framework of the reconstruction and economic recovery of the island after hurricane Maria, Jenniffer González Colón attended the “Business meeting Spain – Puerto Rico”, organized by CEOE, the Spanish Chamber of Commerce and ICEX with the support of Fundación Consejo España – EE.UU.
