5th edition of the Spain - U.S. Congressional Visitors Program 2018

The Fundación organized together with the Embassy of Spain in the U.S. and the support of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the 5th edition of the Spain - U.S. Congressional Visitors Program 2018, held in Madrid and Salamanca from 2 to 6 July. The think tank Global and International Studies which belongs to the University of Salamanca also collaborated in the organization of the program.

The delegation was formed by David Dudik, Operations Director for Senator Bob Corker (R-TN), Peter Freeman, Deputy Chief of Staff for Congressman Ed Royce (R-CA), Nicole Porreca, Senior Foreign Policy Advisor for Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Curtis Swager Legislative Director for Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO), accompanied by Fernando Prieto, Political Counsellor at the Embassy of Spain in the U.S.

The busy schedule included high level meetings at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, EU and Cooperation, the Ministry of Defense, the Congress of Deputies, the Prime Minister’s Office and the U.S. Embassy in Madrid; working meetings with researchers at Elcano Royal Institute, the Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies and Global and International Studies and with journalists at El Pais newspaper; and visits to companies and institutions such as Navantia, Acciona or Cervantes Institute, Members of the Board of Fundación.

The participants also learned about the Spanish historical and artistic heritage visiting the Museo del Prado, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, which exhibits the only portrait of General Washington in Europe, and the Historic Library of the University of Salamanca, where extraordinary incunabula of Medieval and Renaissance periods are preserved.

Through this program, the Fundación accomplishes its mission as a Public Diplomacy instrument which aims to strengthen the bilateral relationship between Spain and the United States and to promote a better understanding between our civil societies.
