Meeting between Hispanic Businessmen and Spanish Businessmen

Organized by the Fundación Consejo España – EE.UU., a meeting between Hispanic and Spanish businessmen was held at Casa de América in Madrid on September 30-October 2, 2004.
Taking part in this meeting was a group of fourteen Hispanic businessmen from different parts of the United States and representatives from Spanish financial and business institutions. Speaking on behalf of the Spanish government at this meeting was the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and for Latin America, Mr. Bernadino León; the Secretary of Finance, Mr. Miguel Angel Fernández Ordóñez; the Executive Vice-President of Spain’s Institute for Foreign Trade (ICEX), Mr. Angel Martín Acebes and the Director of Casa de América, Ms. María Asunción Ansorena.
The business men were received in audience by HRH the Prince of Asturias, Don Felipe de Borbón.
The work sessions were divided into three parts, dealing with the following topics:
“The facts and figures of the Hispanic economy: demography, trends and challenges of its business class for the upcoming decade”
“Current situation: relations between the Hispanic and Spanish economy”
“Prospects and problems in the relations between Hispanic and Spanish businessmen”
This being a first meeting of this type, the main objective for the Spanish businessmen was to be able to know what prospects the Hispanic market in that country has to offer and identify the prospects in the commercial fields and investment opportunities.
In turn, the Hispanic businessmen proposed that this strategy revolve around a number of measures, which could include the following points:
Conducting sectorial market studies on the Hispanic market
Organizing one or more meetings between Spanish and Hispanic businessmen focusing on certain sectors, including those mentioned in following: financial, media, food products, health and publishing sector. A meeting could also be organized for promoting Spanish investments in Hispanic companies in previously-selected sectors.
The Fundación Consejo España – EE.UU. is going to follow up on this type of meetings revealing the existence of good prospects for business collaboration between Spain and the Hispanic community in the United States.
