José M. de Areilza holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from Harvard University, a Master of Arts in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and a Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (S.J.D.) from Harvard University. In 1991 he was admitted to the New York Bar. Between 1996 and 2000 he served as advisor to the Spanish Prime Minister on European and North American affairs. In 2007 he was appointed Member of the Board of Governors of the Madrid Bar Association. Between 2008 and 2012 he was Professor of Law, Jean Monnet Chair and Dean of IE Law School at IE Business School. He writes a weekly column on international affairs in the newspaper ABC and is a Member of its Board of Directors. In 2013 he became a Member of the European Council on Foreign Relations and was appointed Senior Research Fellow at Elcano Royal Institute. He is a Trustee of the Spanish Navy Museum and of Fundación Transición Española. He has recently published the book "Law and Power in the European Union" (Civitas, 2014).
